Mellel 6.2 is Here!
Mellel 6.2 introduces several key improvements and enhancements in bibliography and citations, word format support, equations, table of contents in PDF and Mandaic script support.
Bibliography Enhancements
The Bibliography palette's citations in document is now much more useful and easy to use, it shows you all the citations in the document, in order of appearance. Clicking an citation in the list will navigate to the citation location in the document and double-clicking will open it for editing. You can also option click to navigate into the reference in Bookends and a handy context menu allows you explicit access to these options.
The citation editing dialog also received some attention with a clearer layout a couple of esoteric (and rather confusing) options were removed.
Word Format Support For Comments
Mellel supported comments in RTF format for a long time, but with word format (aka docx) this support has been lacking, to the puzzlement of many. With Mellel 6.2 this omittance has been fixed. Comments in docx documents are imported into Mellel and comments in Mellel documents are exported to docx documents.
Better Equations
Mellel equations, added to Mellel in version 6.1, are crisp and nice and that is a reason to rejoice but some tiny annoyance is lurking in the background, literally.
You see, the equations produced by the equation panel have a white background. Usually this is not big deal as the vast majority of documents have a white background anyway, but it does pose some issues in the occasion you need your fancy math on a non-white background.
Mellel 6.2 comes with the obvious solution to this issue - equations now get a transparent background and can fit in with any background color.
This gives us another advantage which is the way equations look in dark mode, we avoided giving equations the dark mode treatment of reversing the color (white on black) because the background of the equation would usually not translate to the same color as the page background. With transparent background equations we can safely reverse the color and the results are very pleasing to the eye.
Improved Table of Contents
Mellel tables of contents are beautiful, and you can customize them to the hilt, which is cool. When you export to PDF, the page numbers in the TOC serve as links to the corresponding section in the document, also cool. However, since only the page numbers in the TOC respond to the click, it makes it hard to target and therefore use. Mellel 6.2 brings a subtle but important improvement in that front. Instead of just the page number, the whole table of contents line is clickable which makes them much more usable and easy to discover.
Mandaic Script Support
This is great news to researches and scholars who wish to incorporate Mandaic texts into their Mellel document as Mellel 6.2 now supports rendering Mandaic text correctly, this includes the right-to-left ordering as well as using the correct forms of the letters depending on their position in the word.
